Charge an application fee
Add an application fee to a property. Renters pay it by card after they apply, and it goes to your Stripe account.
Add the fee
- Step 1Open the property from Properties and go to its Fees section.
- Step 2Select Add a fee. Leave Type on Application.
- Step 3Enter the Name renters see and a dollar amount in Amount ($), and keep How often on one time.
- Step 4Tick Every renter pays it, then select Save fee.
Important: Only an application fee with a dollar amount, charged one time, with Every renter pays it ticked, is charged online. A percentage, or a fee without that box, is shown on the listing but not charged.
Some states limit application fees. Where Holuway knows a state's limit, it never charges more than that limit, whatever the fee says. Check the rules where the home is.
How renters pay
Renters see the fee and a card processing fee before they apply, and pay by card on a secure Stripe page after they send the application. The renter pays the processing fee; you receive your application fee in your Stripe account.
Until your payouts are set up, Holuway does not charge the fee: it shows as You collect it and the renter is told you will say how to pay. Applications sent before you set up payouts stay that way.
Refund or waive a fee
On an application, a paid fee has Refund: the full amount goes back to the applicant's card, Holuway's part included, and a refund cannot be undone. A fee not paid yet has Waive: the applicant is not asked to pay it, and any open payment page stops working.
Only people who can move money for your organization, normally owners and admins, can refund or waive.
